Dry or dehydrated? What your skin really needs

They feel similar, but they need different things. Here is how to tell them apart.
Dry skin lacks oil. It often feels rough, flaky and tight all over, and it is usually your skin type. Dehydrated skin lacks water. It can happen to any skin type, even oily skin, and shows up as fine, crepey lines and dullness.
Dehydrated skin loves humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, applied to damp skin. Dry skin needs those too, plus richer lipids such as ceramides, squalane and shea butter to hold the water in.
Most people benefit from both: a hyaluronic serum first, then a ceramide cream. On the body, apply lotion within three minutes of showering to lock water in.
If your skin is cracked, weeping or very itchy, see a pharmacist or GP, as it may be eczema that needs treatment.
